Some skin doesn’t show itself with shine, but with tension. After washing it feels a size too small. In winter, rough spots appear, make-up gets stuck on fine flakes and even a friendly smile can suddenly hurt.

That sounds like dry skin. But here too it is worth taking a second look. Because dry and low-moisture are related, but not the same.

How to recognize dry skin

Dry Skin produces comparatively little sebum over a long period of time. It appears rather dull, often feels rough and can tend to form fine scales. Pores often appear small. A feeling of tension is particularly noticeable after cleaning or in cold, dry weather.

Observe the pattern for several days. A single dry morning after a strong exfoliation does not make a skin type. On the other hand, if the skin has not been oily for a long time and regularly requires cream, it is more likely that the skin is dry.

Dry or just low in moisture?

Above all, dry skin has too few lipids – fats that, together with other components, form the barrier of the stratum corneum. Dehydrated skin contains too little water. This condition can occur on any skin type, even oily skin.

In practice, the two often overlap. The skin feels tight, looks pale and shows fine lines of dryness. A hyaluronic serum can then bind water. But if there is nothing above that to slow down the water loss, the result is sometimes surprisingly short.

Severe itching, cracks, weeping spots, bleeding or persistent burning are more than just a cosmetic feeling of dryness. For example, this could be due to eczema, psoriasis or another disease. This needs to be assessed dermatologically.

Stabilize the basic routine

Dry Skin doesn’t need ten layers. It takes just a few steps to add water and not further remove the barrier.

In the morning

  1. Rinse only with lukewarm water or use a very mild cleanser.
  2. Apply a moisturizer to slightly damp skin.
  3. Finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

In the evening

  1. Gently remove sunscreen and make-up. A second cleaner is only necessary if residue remains.
  2. Use a moisturizing step if comfortable.
  3. Finish with a cream that retains water in the skin and replenishes lipids.

Ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids are naturally part of the barrier of the stratum corneum. In a well-formulated cream they can support dry or compromised skin. Squalane, glycerin, dimethicone or shea butter can also be useful. What matters is not the most prominent substance on the packaging, but the entire formula.

Add at most one targeted active ingredient

If tension and dryness lines are the main problem, hyaluronic acid can be a targeted moisturizing step. It binds water in the formulation and in the upper layers of the skin. Apply it to slightly damp skin and then add a cream over it.

If the skin is rather rough, flaky and easily irritable, a ceramide-rich cream is often the more sensible first addition. Then a thin layer is not added to the routine, but rather the basis itself is improved.

Start with one of these changes. Hyaluron plus new cream plus exfoliation sounds thorough, but makes the cause of a reaction invisible.

In low concentrations, lactic acid can combine moisture and gentle flaking. However, it is not the first step on cracked, burning or irritated skin. First comes rest. Then, if anything, the exfoliation.

Which probably doesn’t help

  • Hot water and long cleaning.
  • Coarse exfoliants against visible scales.
  • Alcohol-rich toners or highly degreasing foam cleaners.
  • Just a moisturizing serum without a finishing cream.
  • Trying out a new active ingredient every evening.
  • Confusing fragrances with “relaxing” when the skin is already sensitive.

K-Beauty can help dry skin particularly where it fine-tunes textures: a watery moisturizing step, a well-tolerated cream and sun protection that can be worn regularly. The number of bottles is not a quality level.

Briefly summarized

Dry Skin usually appears dull, regularly tightens and tends to be rough or flaky. On the other hand, any skin type can be dehydrated.

The sensible approach is: Recognize skin condition, stabilize the basic routine and add at most one targeted active ingredient. Hyaluronic acid can bind water. Care containing ceramide can support the barrier. If there are cracks, severe itching or persistent irritation, the skin needs an expert diagnosis instead of another serum.

Lee’s fact note

  • The stratum corneum limits the skin’s water loss. Their important lipids include ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids.
  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerin are humectants. They bind water, but do not automatically replace a protective cream.
  • Creams and ointments usually prevent water loss more effectively than light lotions or gels.
  • Fragrance-free and “without a noticeable scent” are not the same thing: so-called unscented products can also contain fragrances or odor-neutralizing substances.
  • Very dry, cracked, itchy or bleeding skin can have medical causes.
